The Coastline January 2008
By Melinda D. Henderson, Ph.D.
DeFuniak Springs, Florida
During his annual visit on
December 9, 2007, Bishop Philip Duncan re-dedicated St.
Agatha’s Church and Vicarage following the completion of three
Historic Preservation Grants. Since 2001 the church has received
approximately $265,000 from the Florida Department of State,
Bureau of Historic Preservation which they matched with approximately
$40,000 from their own funds. In addition they have
completed about $35,000 in non-grant improvements to both
buildings. These improvements required many volunteer hours.
Fr. John Scott, Vicar, thanked Melinda Henderson (grant
author and administrator), the grant committee, the contractors,
the pro bono consultants and benefactors as well as the parishioners
for their unwavering support during the long and arduous
process. With new roofs, strengthened foundations, leveled floors,
restoration of stained glass, restoration of wood siding and
repainting for both buildings it is anticipated that these structures
should last another 120 years.
